Take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to get excited! You're about to make something wonderful that will feed a new habit of mending and sustainability and a skill that is priceless. And try to put any thoughts of "I have no idea what I'm doing" or "I'll be terrible at this" aside. It's just not true! You're here to learn and grow -- let's focus on that!
Step by Step Instructions for your Sock Darning Project
To begin your project, you can choose if you'd like to create a hole in your sock to practice on. You can also just choose a spot on your sock and "decorate".
- Insert your mending mushroom into the sock so that the hole is in the center. Wrap the elastic band around to hole it in place.
- With you wool thread loaded on a needle you'll begin to the right, about an inch from the hole. You'll be stitching in slim rows across the hole and then an inch to the left of the hole. This will leave the threads exposed over the hole.
- Next, load your other color thread (or use the same color if you choose). You'll now work across in a cross hatch. You'll want to being at the bottom, about an inch from the hole. Stitch across until you get to the loose threads over the hole.
- Weave over/under through the loose threads over the hole. Keep going until you are about an inch above the hole.
- Trim you ends and you're finished! Enjoy your visible mending and you're newly beautiful sock!
