Come join us for a skill-building journey into the practical and creative world of knitting and mending! In this 14-week in-person class, students will learn the basics of knitting with needles, practice simple mending techniques, and gain confidence in their ability to make and repair with their own hands.

Rooted in Charlotte Mason principles and inspired by Waldorf’s rhythmic, hands-on approach, this class honors the growing capabilities of older children. At this age, students are ready for sustained attention and more complex motor tasks—making it the perfect time to dive into true knitting work.

We begin by reviewing foundational handwork practices and progress into more complex projects:

  • Making our own knitting needles! (a crowd favorite)
  • Learning the Knit Stitch, Cast On and Bind Off
  • Creating a simple knit swatch and turning it into a bunny
  • Other knitting projects as students progress including a lion, lamb and pouch
  • Learning basic mending skills: sashiko stitch, patching, and more
  • Form Drawing for practice in hand/eye coordination and spacial awareness

As the class progresses, students will create their first knitting projects—like a scarf, pouch, or coasters—while learning how to mend small tears and care for handmade items. Each session offers a gentle rhythm of story, instruction, and hands-on work in a calm, supportive group environment.

Each week includes:

  • Group time with Ms. Katy and friends

  • Step-by-step handwork instruction

  • Gentle project progression and skill building

  • Seasonal stories and quiet time for crafting

  • Celebrating and sharing finished work

Skills We’ll Cover:

  • Beginning knitting: slip knot, cast on, knit stitch, bind off

  • Simple mending: patching, stitching, and reinforcing fabric

  • Fine motor development and focused hand use
