Join us for a weekly Homeschool Studio Day designed for older students ready to engage more deeply with ideas, discussion, and meaningful work. This 14-week program offers a rich blend of academic exploration, creative practice, and community connection guided by Katy and specialty teachers.

Rooted in the Charlotte Mason approach, this class supports growing adolescents as they develop critical thinking, self-expression, and a sense of responsibility to the world around them. Students will engage with both historical and contemporary ideas while continuing to build practical and artistic skills.

This studio day is designed to meet students in this unique stage of development—offering space for thoughtful dialogue, creative exploration, and purposeful work within a supportive community.

In the fall, we will explore a rich feast of learning that includes :

Artist Study

  • In-depth study of Katsushika Hokusai
  • Exploration of composition, movement, and perspective
  • Hands-on projects including brush and ink studies, block printing, and mixed media work inspired by his techniques

Composer Study

  • Listening and reflection centered on Tōru Takemitsu, with additional selections from Claude Debussy
  • Exploration of how music expresses movement, mood, and the natural world
  • Guided listening to support focus, attention, and thoughtful response

Creative Writing

  • Development of personal voice through poetry, reflection, and narrative writing
  • Place-based writing and perspective work inspired by our studies
  • Opportunities to revise, refine, and share polished pieces

Plutarch & Discussion

  • Introduction to Plutarch studies through read aloud, narration and guided discussion
  • Emphasis on character, virtue, and thoughtful conversation
  • Connections to modern life through current events discussions

Handcraft & Art

  • Skill-building through meaningful, process-based projects
  • Techniques may include paper marbling, block printing, indigo dyeing, sashiko stitching, and bookbinding
  • Emphasis on craftsmanship, patience, and creating beautiful, useful objects

Mindfulness & Reflection

  • Weekly practices that support attention, presence, and self-awareness
  • Quiet moments woven throughout the day for observation and reflection

Community Service

  • Participation in a collaborative service project
  • Students will create handmade items such as journals, printed cards, or textiles to donate to local organizations around Christmas time
  • Emphasis on meaningful contribution, dignity in giving, and connection to community

The Rhythm of the day will loosely look like :

  • Opening circle with mindfulness practice
  • Artist and/or composer study
  • Creative Writing practice
  • Lunch and movement (Lunches will be packed and brought from home)
  • Plutarch reading and discussion
  • Handwork or Art project
  • Closing reflection and sharing

Supplies:
All materials for classroom projects are provided and included in the cost of the class.

Schedule:
Time: Fridays from 10:00am–2:00pm
Dates: Begins September 11th and ends on December 18th (full calendar to come)
Location: Grow Creative Studio inside the Historic Sacred Heart Building in East Hill

Investment:
$650 up front OR
$25 deposit and $163 billed monthly September–December

Please note: Acceptance into this program requires an application. Refunds are available up to one month before the start date. After that, only partial refunds can be offered due to materials and planning commitments. Enrollment is a commitment to the full session, and payments are expected even if a student withdraws.
